One of the things about this appropriation conversation when it comes to asian people profiting off of African american culture is that somehow it always goes back to nicki minaj as a way to deflect. Like they aren’t the same thing especially if we look at ppl like rich chigga, awkafina or like…. a strong majority of kpop. With nicki minaj without her doing the whole harajuku thing there’s still SOMETHING left. Her whole career isn’t soley based on her pulling from chinese and japanese culture. there’s still a substantial bit amount of HER even without those elements. With rich chigga and awkafinite, in particular, their entire careers are literally based off of them copy-pasting random bits of black american culture and making money off of that. You take those elements away and what do you have left? nothing. they literally made their way to fame and wealth exclusively using my culture so the conversation isn’t the same. at all. and we don’t even want to get into kpop because that would essentially mean dismantling every single group.
